Orwell himself illustrates the prisoner as ‘a puny wisp of a man’ with ‘a thick sprouting moustache’ and ‘vague liquid eyes.’ On the other hand, the superintendent has ‘a grey toothbrush moustache’ and the head jailer is portrayed as ‘a fat Dravidian in a white drill suit and gold spectacles.’ From his description, the readers get an image of a short, weak prisoner, crummy and unshaved. The physical description of the characters portray the pathetic nature of power involved in capital punishment by evoking sympathy towards the prisoner.
